FORT LAMY AND KUSSERI 49 In the centre stood Moll with his staff and artillery.It was none too soon, for the enemy, consisting ofmixed cavalry and infantry, 5000 strong, charged theFrench. They were received with a withering fire, theartillery playing an important part, but the Frenchline was broken by the force of numbers, and a terriblehand-to-hand struggle ensued.
