columns, one for each stateexisting at the time of Lincolnsdeath. Within the central hall is a colossal figure of the martyr-Presi-dent—the work of Daniel ChesterFrench. On opposite walls, and sepa-rated from the central hall by a rowof four Ionic columns, are two me-morial tablets, one containing Lin-colns Gettysburg address, the otherhis second inaugural address. Abovethe tablets are two large muralpaintings, Emancipation andReunion, by Jules Guerin. The Lincoln Memorial stands in amost fitting setting at the westernend of the Mall, on the axis of theWashington Monument and theCapitol. It has an impressive ap-proach of broad steps and wide ter-races that lend it an air of solitaryand dignified grandeur typical of theman whose memory it perpetuates. The Lincoln Memorial, designedby Henry Bacon, is conceded to bethe finest monument ever erected tothe memory of a man. Many peoplehave pronounced it the most beauti-ful building erected anywhere sincethe beginning of the Christian era.
