execution. Members of the family ofDaniel Chester French, who de-signed and modeled the statue, have said he made no profit onit. Georgia Marble. The carving of the Lincolnstatue was done by the six Pic-cirilJi brothers in their shopsin New York, where Mr.French also worked. It wascarved out of 28 blocks ofGeorgia white marble soadroitly joined together theyappear as one huge monolith. Memorial visitors are greatlyimpressed by the strength andkindliness expressed in theface and hands of the statue. Some typical comments are:Its the most human chunkof stone I ever saw; He setsso natural/ and I want myson to see this. Its terrific. Theres a story of one littleboy who started to climb thepedestal and was told by hismother: We must not do any-thing undignified here. Thisis a holy place. I didnt mean to be undigni-fied, mommy, he replied. Iwas just going to climb up onhis lap. He looks so lonesome. Original filed: Drawer: Washington, D.
