Daniel Chester Frenchs SeatedLincoln in the Lincoln Memorialranks second only to the UnitedStates Capitol as the symbol ofAmerican democracy. As a touristmecca and gathering place, theMemorial has served as a backdropfor many dramatic chapters inAmerican history. Other sculptureby French is less well known butstill contributes to the fabric andpersonality of Washington andmany other cities. While the publicmay not associate Frenchs namewith these landmarks, the monu-ments themselves are instantlyrecognized. The National Trust for HistoricPreservation is pleased to presentthis photographic exhibition of 14pieces of sculpture by Daniel ChesterFrench now in the nations capital;it is hoped that in addition topersonalizing his work for manypeople, the exhibit will encouragea long overdue reexamination of thecontribution of this important artist. 7*P

fel T - . Daniel Chester French was born inChester, N.H., in 1850. He receivedhis early art training in Concord,Mass., and studied anatomy withDr. William Rimmer and sculpturewith J. Q. A. Ward. In 1872 Ralph Waldo Emerson, afamily friend, helped French obtainhis first major commission, theMinute Man that was to be erectedat North Bridge for the centennialof the Battle of Concord. Anunknown sculptor at the time,French succeeded in creating one ofthe most famous American statuesever to be executed. In 1874 Frenchsailed for Europe to study withThomas Ball, missing the unveilingof the Minute Man that brought himinstant acclaim. French returned to America in 1882.At various times he maintainedstudios in Washington, D.C.; Con-cord, Mass.; and New York City. Hemarried his cousin Mary AdamsFrench in 1888, and in 1895 theypurchased a farm in the HousatonicValley in Massachusetts. Chester-wood, as French called his belovedretreat, was his summer studio andhome until his death in 1931. Frenchs
