Statue of the Is-Salvatur (Risen Christ) in Gozo (by Carmel Grech)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Statue of the Risen Christ in Gozo is to be found on the top of Tas-Salvatur hill. The present statue is 6-metre hight and its arms stretch 6 metres wide. Five times smaller than the one in Rio de Janeiro, but still pretty impressive. According to oral tradition, the first stone statue of Our Saviour was placed on top of the hill in 1870. The statue was replaced several times as most of them suffered serious structural damage due to its exposure to the elements. The current statue was places in July 1979 and restored in 2014 (by Carmel Grech). The layout of the land meant that cranes could not be used and hoisting sections via a helicopter was out of the question. So, the outer shell of the statue was divided into six parts and installed on a pedestal, then concrete mix was poured into the shell part filling the whole statue into one solid concrete structure.
