Summary[edit]
DescriptionStateLibQld 1 54148 Indooroopilly Road Bridge, Brisbane, 1936.jpg |
English: Indooroopilly Road Bridge, Brisbane, 1936
The Indooroopilly Toll Bridge was seen as advantageous over the contemporary Council Vehicular Ferry in terms of both its time-saving ability and its capacity to generate greater income. A suspension type bridge was chosen as the most suitable for the site as there was no necessity for river piers, eliminating the danger from flood waters, and its stability would not be affected by any debris collected from the adjacent railway bridge (Information taken from: Indooroopilly Toll Bridge Limited, Prosepectus, 1931?). Caption: The longest suspension bridge in Australia. Total length 1,305 feet. Span over Brisbane River 600 feet. Indooroopilly pylon 87 feet high. The height of the Chelmer pylon with foundations is 187 feet. Opened for road traffic February 14th 1936. Designed and built by W. Taylor Esq. for Indooroopilly Toll Bridge Ltd. under Queensland Government franchise. Directors: W. H. Green Esq., H. J. Foote Esq., W. Taylor Esq., W. T. Smellie Esq.. This image depicts the foot and vehicular traffic that crowded the bridge on its opening day. |
