DescriptionStateLibQld 1 133649 Barunga (ship).jpg |
English: Cargo steamship Barunga. This is probably the 4,342 GRT Barunga that Canadian Vickers built in Montreal in 1918 for the UK Shipping Controller as the war standard cargo ship War Faith. If so, she is the ship that the British South Africa Shipping Co bought in 1919 and renamed Cape Premier, and the Adelaide Steamship Co of South Australia bought in 1921 and renamed her Barunga. Chinese owners bought her in 1935 and renamed her Shing Ho. Miyachi Kisen KK of Japan acquired her in 1938 and renamed her Seizan Maru. US aircraft sank her off Saipan in the Pacific in 1944. This ship is widely confused with an earlier Barunga that Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft built as Sumatra for the Deutsche-Australische Linie in 1913, was seized in 1915 and allocated to the Australian Commonwealth Government, and was sunk by a German submarine in 1918. That was a larger ship, 7,484 GRT and carried troops as well as cargo. |
