Stanmer Church, Stanmer Park, Stanmer, City of Brighton and Hove, England.Listed at Grade II by Historic England (NHLE Code 1380955) The former parish church of Stanmer village. Monument to Sir John Pelham (d.1580), Member of Parliament. Arms: Quarterly of 4, 1&4: Azure, three pelicans argent vulning themselves proper (Pelham:); 2: Gules, two pieces of belt erect argent decorated with buckles and studs or (Pelham, 2nd coat, an honourable augmentation, in memory of Sir John Pelham, taking John, King of France, prisoner, at Poitiers(?)); 3: Azure fretty or (? Willoughby ?).(Debrett's Peerage, 1968, p.1172, Pelham, Earl of Yarborough). Impaling St John, of 13 quarters, for his wife. Inscription: He married Judith St John (born c.1545) a daughter of w:Oliver St John, 1st Baron St John of Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, by his first wife Agnes Fisher. Arms of St John: Argent, on a chief gules two mullets or. Judith bequeathed to her brother John St John "the Bede bolstere pillowe blankette hanging and all other furniture that is and used to be in the Chamber at the upper ende of the hall at Darlton when I am there my selfe". Sir John Pelham died on October 13, 1580 and was buried "by torchlight" at Holy Trinity Church in the Minories, City of London. The church was destroyed by German bombing during WWII, but the monument had already been moved to Stanmer Church. More information see [1] |
