As he went toObeid, on his return to Khartoom, he fell in with a caravan,and was asked to allow them to travel under the protection ofhis soldiers. He assented; but learned later on that there wasa gang of eighty slaves with it. Questioning the merchants,they declared that these were their wives and children. Thewomen and children were in chains, a circumstance which didnot tend to confirm what the men said; but there were nomeans of disproving the assertion, and Gordon was obliged tocontent himself with insisting ^that the chains should be re-moved.44
