DescriptionStained glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle (29751548981).jpg |
""Oh, if there were only a true religion. Fool that I am, I see a Gothic cathedral and venerable stained-glass windows, and my weak heart conjures up the priest to fit the scene. My soul would understand him, my soul has need of him. I only find a nincompoop with dirty hair." ~Stendhal Hands down, Ste Chapelle (1248) is the most beautiful church I have ever been in. The interior is entirely stained glass and painted walls. I attended a string quartet concert here during the last hour of sunlight, and the space glowed with an incredible golden light. Unfortunately, although gorgeous, Ste Chapelle did not feel spiritual at all - a problem with many churches. When travelling, my son and I share a "scavenger hunt" for places that resonate with the soul. Despite our very different beliefs, it's amazing how often we identify the same locations, but this was not one of them. |
