bury; that in theGood Samaritan window he was using the cartoonsof his master, who designed the windows inCanterbury choir, of which two, as we have seen, remain. He may have come from Canterbury atthe time of the interdict in King Johns reign(1208-1213), when all work there must have beensuspended, and not returned, leaving another tofinish the work after the interdict was removed. It would be a very probable date for the Senswork, but in the absence of the destroyed windowsat Canterbury it is pure conjecture.Chartres. Meanwhile, ever since the fire in 1194, thepeople of Chartres, careless of their personal losses, had been working in a flame of enthusiasm anddevotion at the rebuilding of their Cathedral.Every one, nobles, merchants, craftsmen, andpeasants, gave what they could. Some gave money, some materials, some provisions for the workmen. Those who had nothing else gave their labour, even PLATE XVI HERALDIC PANEL, FROM THE CLERESTORY OF THE NAVE, YORK MINSTER Early Fourteenth Century
Text Appearing After Image:
THIRTEENTH CENTURY GLASS IN FRANCE 93 harnessing themselves to carts to drag stone for thebuilding. Heaven itself seemed to lend its aid,for it is said that Our Lady worked many miraclesof healing at her shrine at Chartres, which soonbecame a thirteenth century Lourdes, to whichpilgrims came from all countries, leaving offeringsof money or jewels. Finally, in 1210 the main part of the buildingseems to have been finished. Entirely rebuilt inhewn stone, says William le Breton some yearslater, the Cathedral of Chartres has nothing tofear from temporal fire from now till the day ofjudgment, and will save from eternal fire the manyChristians who by their alms have contributed toits reconstruction. The great church was now ready to receive itsdecoration : The altars, the painting, the sculpturewere still to be done, and above all the one hundredand twenty-five great windows, with the threegreat roses, and forty-seven lesser ones had to befilled with the glass which still makes ChartresCathe
