Summary[edit]

Description

Caen stone font by Catherine Mawer at St Peter's Church, Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. It was created in 1859 to the outline design of architect Cuthbert Brodrick, who directed the restoration of the church in that year. Showing the remains of what may have been a delicate carving of oak leaves and acorns, the oak leaves being arranged in a group of three, representing the Trinity.

This part of the work was carved by William Ingle, who was part of Catherine Mawer's company at the time. We know this because 1. he did most of the natural vegetation carving for the company, and 2. the delicate quality and deep undercutting of the carving marks it out as his work.

The font was paired with a Caen stone pedestal for the pulpit by the same sculptor; that pedestal is now missing, but it may be the one in St Mary's nearby.
