Description

Alabaster and touchstone mural monument, south wall of chancel, St Mary's Church, Moulton St Mary, Norfolk, to Edmund Anguish (1540-1616) (who married Ann Barton, a daughter of Robert Barton of St. Faith's, Norfolk ("Carthew's Launditch, iii. 318", quoted by Farrer)), his son Richard Anguish (1573-1627) and his grandchildren.

Inscription

Neare unto this place resteth (in assured hoape to rise in Christ) the boddyes of Edmond Anguish of Moulton, Gent., who depted. this liffe the 23rd of August, 1616, aged 76, and of Richard Anguish, whoe married Abraha the daughter of Thomas Gilbert of Burlingham, Gent., and by her had 3 sonnes and 3 daughters, viz., Edmond, Elizabeth, Thomas, Edmond, Abraha, and Katheren, which said Abraha, the wife of the said Richard, deceased the 18th of December, 1626, aged 46, and the said Richard her husband the 14th of Ffebruarye, 1627, aged 54, leavinge at his death on sonne and on daughter, viz., Thomas and Katheren. Edmond Anguishe, Gent., Clark of the Peace for the county of Norfolk, in tokene of his love to his said unckle Edmond, and as Executor to his said cozen Richard, caused this monument to be erected, August, 1628.

Heraldry

Three shields (Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 1, 1885, p.216 [1]):

  • Top: Gules, a cinquefoil pierced or (Anguish of Moulton). Crest: A snake nowed proper between two branches of fern vert (missing)
  • Dexter (viewer's left): Anguish impaling: Ermine, on a canton gules a martlet sable (Barton). The martlet should be "or."
  • Sinister (viewer's right): Anguish impaling: Gules, two bars ermine in chief three fleurs-de-lis or (Gilbert of North Burlingham) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.399); shown here as Ermine, a fess gules on a chief of the second three fleurs-de-lis or
