Description
English: St Mary's Helmingham St Mary's Helmingham

Interior of St Mary's Helmingham Suffolk. Monument erected in 1615 in memory of 4 generations of the Tollemache family, all persons depicted named Lionel Tollemache. (Source: Heraldic Visitations of Suffolk, 1561, pp.70-1[1]) Bottom row:

  • Left: Lyonell Tollemache of Helmingham, who married Edith Helmingham (Helmygam) daughter and heiress of Joice Helmingham; Arms of Tollemache impaling Helmingham (Argent, on a chevron per pale gules and azure three escallops of the field)
  • Centre: Lyonell Tollemache of Helmingham (son of Lyonell & Edith), who married Dorothy Wentworth, daughter of Sir Richard Wentworth of Nettlested, Suffolk; Arms of Tollemache impaling Wentworth above;
  • Right: Lyonell Tollemache of Helmingham (son of Lyonell & Dorothy) who married Susan Jermyn, daughter of Sir Ambrose Jermyn of Rushbrooke, Suffolk. Arms of Tollemache impaling Jermyn above; He was the father of Sir Lionel Tollemache, 1st Baronet (1562 – 1612) of Helmingham Hall (probably the top-most effigy).
