Summary[edit]

Description
English: St Martin-in-the-Fields, London (2014).

Whipping Post (1572). For both men and women whipped "until the body became bloody by reason of such whipping."

Originally used for vagrancy but later included drunkenness, immorality, disorder, blasphemy and slander, forgery, bigamy, theft (provided goods were less than 12 pence, otherwise the punishment was hanging), dissent.

It was revoked for women in 1791 and for men in 1837.
