Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Martin's Church - war memorial. Ruined during the 18th century, a new church was built on the site, to the west of the old church, in the 19th century. When a larger church was needed in the early 1900s it was decided to restore the medieval building by re-using as much as possible of the old materials which still lay in the grass where they had fallen > 1119159 - 1119172 - 1119175. The C14 tower survived all the changes and the nave windows have retained much of their original tracery. Other medieval survivals are an old holy water stoup and the font. The stained glass in the east window > 1119173 dates from 1984. The church contains a number of memorials to the Buxton and Gurney families > 1119184 - 1119188 as well as to Lady Battersea, the daughter of Sir Anthony de Rothschild.
