St George Tombland - C17 monument
Description St George's Church, Tombland, in the City of Norwich, Norfolk, mural monument at west end of nave to John Symonds (d.1609) of Queen Street, a Merchant Taylor and a Freeman of the City of Norwich who served as Sheriff of Norwich in 1603 (www.norwich-heritage.co.uk [1]). Dressed in red robes of an Alderman, kneeling at a prayer desk and opposite his wife Olive. Inscribed: Here underneath lieth interred ye body of John Symonds, Gent, and Olive his wife, who has given by his last tastament, unto ye pore of this parish two shillings a week to continue for ever. An(no) Dom(ini) 1609. Arms: Sable, two boar's heads couped argent (Symonds) impaling Gules, two sheep passant argent (for his wife Olive, of unrecorded family) (Source: Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 3 (1893) Lynn, Norwich, Thetford, Yarmouth, p.54[2]). Possibly Gules, two wolves passant argent (Lowe of Walden, Essex (Papworth, John Woody, Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms Belonging to Families in Great Britain and Ireland, Vol.I, London, 1874, p.150; Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.625)). See arms of Low of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in St George Colegate, Norwich - C18 memorial. Arms: Lubbock: Argent, on a mount vert a stork close ermine on a chief gules three estoiles of the field (Burke, 1884, p.627 "Lubbock of Lamas, Norfolk, Baronets") (quarterly of 4) impaling Gules, two wolves passant argent (Low of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk)
