Left

Per Farrer, pp.26-7: Monument with Four Shields,

  • 1: (At the top, coloured.) Quarterly of 4:
    • 1: Gules, a chevron engrailed between three mullets pierced or (Rugg);
    • 2: Argent, a chevron engrailed between three pairs of keys erect addorsed azure (Mynshawe);
    • 3: Argent, a chevron engrailed between three choughs sable ... (?);
    • 4: Ermine, a chief indented gules (Brome);
  • 2: (At the side, not coloured.) Same as No. 1.
  • 3: Quarterly of 4:
    • 1: Rugg;
    • 2: Mynshawe;
    • 3: Argent, a chevron engrailed between three choughs sable;
    • 4: Brome;

Impaling: Or, on a fesse vert a bull passant argent (Aldrich);

  • 4: Aldrich.

Crest: A talbot passant argent, collared ringed, and eared sable, with a crescent for diffence (Rugg). Inscribed:

Hic prope Patricio Rug^orum sanguine cretus, Franciscus recubat, qui septaginta duosque Per vivens annos isti ter praefuit urbi, Annaque ab Aldriciis qu83 progeneratur evitis Hujus Francisci nuper fidissima conjux, Gondidit hunc tumulum recubantis honore mariti, Obiit ille die xviii^ mensis Octob., Ao. Dni. 1607, Obiit ilia xxiu^ mensis Maii, 1611 (Much obliterated. See Blomfield, Norfolk, iv. 307).
A senator of senators renowned race Was Francis Rugg, now intombed in this place. He was third mayor in 72 years life. Ann being by birth an Aldrich, late his wife, In love hath reared this memorial To celebrate his worthy name withal.

Monument to Robert Suckling (d.1589), East End of the North Aisle, with kneeling Figures and coloured Shield. Heraldry: Per pale gules and azure, three bucks trippant or (Suckling). Crest: A buck trippant or holding in its mouth a branch of honeysuckle proper (Suckling). Inscribed:

Robertus Sucklinge, quondam huius civitatis Norwici Cives et Aldermanus, ex hac vita migravit mense Novembris, Anno Dni. 1589 suscepit ex Elizabetha prima uxore eius dignissima, quinquos filios, totidemque filias omnes (post mortem matris) superstites, Equibus vero Johannis Suckling, natu maximus (olim que Thomso nuper Comitis Dorset, ac summi Angliae Thesaurarii secretarius) sumptibus suis propriis, hoc monumentum .... posuit mense Augusti A(nn)o Salutis 1611

Which may be translated:

Robert Suckling once of this City of Norwich a Citizen and Alderman, migrated from this life in the month of November in the year of our Lord 1589. He received from Elizabeth his most distinguished first wife, five sons, and the same number of daughters all surviving after the death of their mother. His first born son Sir John Suckling, Knight (once the secretary of Thomas, Earl of Dorset, High Treasurer of England (w:Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536-1608), Lord High Treasurer 1599-1608) at his own expense placed this monument (here) in the month of August in the year of grace 1611
