St. Paul AME Church in Washington, D.C.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: St. Paul AME Church in Washington, D.C. The church was founded in 1856 by Anthony Bowen, among others, and located for its first century in Southwest Washington, D.C. In 1958, amid urban renewal, the church relocated to 4901 14th Street N.W. in the Sixteenth Street Heights neighborhood. The 4901 14th Street building was built in 1914 as Iowa Avenue United Methodist Church to a design by Rich & Fitzsimmons as part of the newly developed streetcar community along 14th Street. In 1923, Iowa Avenue merged with the Golden Rule Society to form Hamline Methodist Church, which relocated to a larger Gothic Revival church at 16th and Allison Streets N.W. in 1926. From 1929 to 1958, the 14th Street building was owned by the B'nai Israel Synagogue.
