Then the bear, seeing himself hopelesslyout-distanced, plunged into a thicket and dis-appeared in the direction of the nearest moun-tain. Throughout the whole race Jud had held onfor dear life, keeping his place in the saddle bya miracle, his legs flying and flopping in theair at every jump of the racing horse, while histoes curled convulsively each time that thefierce head of the bear appeared under them.At first the boys were horrified at Juds danger,but when they saw that he was safe they roaredwith delight at his acrobatic riding. Even theimpassive Indians grinned at the sight of thosewaving legs. Seeing that the bear no longerfollowed him, Jud at last managed to climb intothe saddle and, recovering his rifle, rode backto the party who were waiting for him.
