Summary[edit]

Description
English: St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, 415 Woodward Avenue at Amherst Street, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. Faced with Indiana limestone, the simplified Gothic Revival design of the building is reminiscent of 15th-century English parish churches: witness the multitudinous finial-topped pinnacles atop the main elevation as well as the tower, the ogee-arched window hood above the large stained-glass window facing Woodward Avenue matching the similar arches crowning the tripartite entrance, the quatrefoils above the louvered windows on the tower, and the crenellation of the parapet atop the tower. Its interior features an open, pillarless floor plan with decorative tile flooring and wainscoting. The parish was founded in 1908 to serve the Parkside neighborhood, whose northwestern reached had recently begun urbanizing to match the portion closer to Main Street; the original wood-frame church was replaced with this larger building constructed 1914-17. The tower followed in 1954. St. Mark's remains an active parish within the Buffalo diocese today, sharing a pastor since 2010 with the neighboring St. Rose of Lima church, and its school is among the top-rated private elementary schools in Western New York.
