Summary

[edit]
Description Early 16th Century Perpendicular window of the church of St. Heiratha's, Chittlehampton. Giffard of Brightley Chapel. Heraldic glass 19th century, erected in memory of Hardinge Giffard, 1st Earl of Halsbury (1823-1921), Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, a prominent lawyer and author of "Halsbury's Statutes", legal reference volumes. Arms of Giffard of Halsbury in the parish of Parkham, Devon, from which ancient family he was descended, although the estate of Halsbury had been sold by his family many generations before his birth. Brightley, Chittlehampton, was the seat of a junior branch of the Giffard family, from which the Earl was not descended, and again which passed from the Giffard many generations before his birth. It is difficult to see what solid connection he had with Chittlehampton. Furthermore a son of Giffard of Brightley acquired Tiverton Castle, apparently prompting the Earl to select the title "Viscount Giffard of Tiverton" as his secondary title. Arms, left to right: Arms of Merton College, Oxford; Giffard of Halsbury with coronet of an earl above; Coat of arms of the Inner Temple; arms of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers.
