| Description |
Pinchot State Forest, Lackawanna County. The natural area protects a small, relict boreal conifer bog in a mountain basin. Some Black Spruce Picea mariana, mixed with Red Spruce Picea rubens, grow from a thick blanket of sphagnum moss. Access into the bog is limited. A few deer trails (or bear trails, perhaps) enter the periphery of the bog from Tannery Road but quickly vanish into the mire. Surrounding the core of the bog (and forming a nearly impenetrable barrier) are dense thickets of highbush blueberry and other shrubs. |
