Drayton, The sambur, the .largest of the Indian deer, iswidely distributed, being found over the wholecontinent, and in Ceylon, wherever there are hillranges covered with jungle. Though only one speciesexists throughout, with no marked variation in size orappearance, the divergence in size of antlers fromdifferent parts of the country is extreme. The largestheads are found in Central India, and many very fineones have been shot on the Nilgiris. In Wynaad thehorns are usually somewhat shorter and less massivethan those on the higher but adjoining plateau : theyrule comparatively small on the Himalayas and in theEast of the Peninsula : while in Ceylon a really goodhead, judged by the Indian standard, is unknown.
