Summary[edit]

Description

Spoon-winged lacewings - Chasmoptera sp Recently we visited Lake Deborah north of Bullfinch and found some exquisite Spoon-winged lacewings. We were able to observe them for a few hours.

Their hind wings pump up and down as they fly. They can fly fast or slow in a fluttering fashion. The flight path is as a wave action. They are sometimes seen resting on the branches of the shrubs or perched on dried sticks on the ground. The females lay eggs in the sand. Movement from the hind wings appears to help the abdomen penetrate the sand.
