THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE. (From a ^hoiograJ>h hy Messrs. Bassano, Old Bond Street, W.) Born 23rd July, 1833. Succeeded to the title on the death of his father, 1891. Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire and Co. Waterford, Heir: Victor C. W. Cavendish, M.P., Nephew. Patience grows not in every garden. The Duke of Devonshire. ^nij? HE present Duke of Devonshire is the eighth^J>^ to hold that title. He is the son of theseventh duke and Blanche, the daughter of thesixth Earl of Carlisle. Previous to his succeeding to the dukedom in 1891 he had been long well-known to the world as the Marquis of Hartina;ion. He entered on political life in 1857 as Parllainentaiy member f)r North Lancashire, his place being on the ) iberal side of the House After holding several minor offices he attainedto Cabinet rank in 1866, when he became Secre-tary fcr War. He was Postmaster-General inMr. Gladstones first administration, and heldthat office till 1871, when he was made ChiefSecretary for Ireland. When Mr.
