English: On 17 July 2022, a major fire broke out near the locality of Losacio, in the Zamora province, in the Spanish autonomous region of Castilla y Léon. The rapid spread of the flames caused the evacuation of thousands of inhabitants and the death of two people. Moreover, the blaze ignited in an area adjacent to the one where 25,000 hectares of forest were burnt by the Sierra de la Culebra wildfire in June 2022. The Rapid Mapping Team of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) was activated by the Operational Coordination Centre (CECOP) of the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies of Spain in both instances (ESMR580 and ESMR602) to monitor the fires and assess the damage they caused. Together, the two fires burnt an area close to the one of Madrid. This visualisation, based on CEMS data, shows the burnt areas of the two wildfires. As of 21 July 2022 at 10:44 UTC, more than 31,000 hectares of land had been affected by the Losacio blaze. An Information Bulletin has been published by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, detailing the CEMS activities related to the ongoing wildfire crisis in the Mediterranean region. |
