| Description |
On 8 September 1954, New Zealand signed the South-East Asia Collective Defence Treaty, or the ‘Manila Pact’, at a conference in Manila, Philippines. This collective agreement was intended to prevent the spread of communism throughout South-East Asia, acting under the auspices of the United Nations. The Pact was signed by the United States, Britain, France, Australia, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines, and led to the formation of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) as a body for organizing collective defence for the region. New Zealand and Australia would both subsequently use their association with SEATO as justification for their military involvement in the Vietnam War. New Zealand’s signatory to the treaty was Sir Thomas Clifton Webb. A former Cabinet Minister, Webb held the post of High Commissioner in London in 1954. These illustrations of the treaty signatories and the accompanying brochure, come from publicity material issued at the conference. They are part of a series of personal records donated by Webb relating to his tenure as High Commissioner in London.
