Description

New Orleans, 1940. "For the fifth consecutive year the WPA recreation project begins its summer showers program. Boys and girls of New Orleans will cool off at seventeen locations in the city. The formal opening of the program, shown here, was held at the fire station at 231 South Broad Street. Exterior."

The "Summer Showers Program" provided sprays of water at fire stations for children to play and cool off in. This photo shows a fire truck driving out of the South Broad station, presumably at the end of a "shower".
