Over this highway General Sherman atthe dose of the Civil War led his army back to the National Capital on their returnfrom their march from Atlanta to the Sea. Over this same highway too, Washing-ton always passed when he rode into Alexandria on horseback or in his coach. OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND. 25 A short distance above the Electric Railway is the new iron bridge of the turnpiketo Accotink eight miles below. On Seminary Heights are the remains of Fort Worthconstructed by Gen. Kearneys first New Jersey brigade in i86r. ft had an arma-ment of heavy and long range guns. Grouped around this fort in close proximity soas to command all the approaches to Alexandria were Forts Ellsworth, Farnsworth,Willard, Weed, ORourke and Lyons.
