On the sixteenth of June, 1775, he appeared in his place in Congress, after his appointment as commander-in-chief of the colonial armies, and after refusing allpay beyond his expenses, he spoke with unfeignedmodesty to his colleagues—As the Congress desire it,I will enter upon the momentous duty, and exert everypower I possess in their service and for the support ofthe glorious cause.
