ONLY A MEMORY, 24 SOME OLD HISTORIC LANDMARKS Just beyond the Seminary, in full sight up the valley, are the picketing grounds whichlong divided the two armies ; and near by is Baileys Cross Roads, where was man-ceuvred by the Union forces one of the grandest military reviews of any country ortime. Through these camping and drilling grounds, and far on beyond, may still betraced the course of the old military road, laid out through the then dense wildernessa hundred years previous, by which a portion of Braddocks army under GeneralHalket marched on their disastrous expedition.

Half way between the Seminary and the railway bridge, is Cameron Ford whereHunting Creek is crossed by the Old Kings Highway from Williamsburg, the Ancientital of Virginia, to the Shenandoah River. Over this highway General Sherman atthe dose of the Civil War led his army back to the National Capital on their returnfrom their march from Atlanta to the Sea. Over this same highway too, Washing-ton always passed when he rode into Alexandria on horseback or in his coach. OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND. 25 A short distance above the Electric Railway is the new iron bridge of the turnpiketo Accotink eight miles below. On Seminary Heights are the remains of Fort Worthconstructed by Gen. Kearneys first New Jersey brigade in i86r. ft had an arma-ment of heavy and long range guns. Grouped around this fort in close proximity soas to command all the approaches to Alexandria were Forts Ellsworth, Farnsworth,Willard, Weed, ORourke and Lyons.
