Nellie Custis, as she was called in her maidenhood, was as witty as she was beauti-ful ; (juick at repartee, highly accomplished, full of information, a good conversation-alist, the life of any company whether young or old, and was greatly beloved by herfoster-father, the great patriot. When in June, 1775, Washington was appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, he placed John Parke Custis, the father of•Nelly, on his staff, in which capacity he served during most of the long war thatfollowed. Here a private tutor of collegiate training was provided for them and under thewatchful and exemplary care of their distinguished guardians, their young minds weredeveloped for the practical duties of life. Nellie was born at Abingdon, the Custis homestead on the Potomac just above thefour mile run, March 21, 1778. Her mother was a descendant of Cecil Calvert, LordPaltimore, through her grandfather Benedict Calvert of Mount Airy, Maryland.
