Summary[edit]

Description

A freak snowstorm - and a very wet one at that - making a premature appearance in New York City even before Halloween.

I used to live in New York City, spending four winters here. Three of them were snowless. So this is a very nasty surprise for me, especially now that I am visiting from balmy California for the first time in years.

At least I got some great photo opportunities out of this! This is only the third ever October snowstorm in New York City since the 1860s, and the first ever recorded snowfall of one inch in Central Park in October. Also as this snowstorm is so early, temperatures are not that cold yet, translating to bigger, wetter snowflakes.

Here, visitors to Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum are caught in the snow. The line is stretching long outside, because the museum's famed rotunda is temporarily closed for installation of a new exhibit. To make a few quick bucks, an entrepreneur has shown up to the visitors' rescue, selling umbrellas.

In the background, life goes on, with an open-air double-decker tour bus still making the rounds. The sign of changing times is in the form of the United Airlines advertising on the bus; United had reduced itself to only a minor player in the New York market in the past decade or two, but thanks to the Continental Airlines merger and the acquisition of Continental's Newark hub, became New York's largest airline overnight. I'm always happy to see United advertising in New York City, as flying United to New York City had clearly defined my early travel patterns (and I again used United for this New York visit).
