Description

Smoke pouring from the fire at the Halle's Department Store fire. On the left is the Beggs Building, now Fifth Third Building at at 21 East State Streeet. This building was evacuated because of all the smoke. While in the process of being demolished the old Halle’s Department store, at 130 South High Street, caught fire. The building was being razed as part of the Capitol South Development. A dense cloud of smoke force the evacuation of surrounding buildings and snarled traffic for hours. The building over the years housed The Union Department Store and Morehouse Fashion.
