The Andes jMountain chain, extending northwardin practically a single range from its origin in southern Chile, divides NO. 5 SMITHSONIAN EXlLORATIONS. I922 73 at the stiutliern Ixiuiulary of Coloniljia into three hranches. known asthe Western, Central, and Eastern cordilleras. Between the Westernand the Central cordilleras lies the valley of the Cauca River; be-tween the Central and the Eastern, the JMagdalena River. On thepresent trip it was possible to visit only the Western and Centralcordilleras, the Cauca A^alley. the cit\- of Ijogota in the EasternCordillera, and one or two localities on the Pacific slope. The expedi-tion entered the country at Buenaventura, the principal seaport onthe Pacific, and at once established headquarters at the village ofLa Cumbre, in the Western Cordillera, for the purpose of studyingthe veqetatinn of the central part of this range. Subsequently trips were made toSalento, in the northern part of the Central range, and to Ibague andBogota, material being collected at historic localities along the QuindiuTrail. Dr. Pennell sailed from the north coast, after exploring thenorthern portion of the Western Cordillera, Dr. Plazen and Mr.Killip returning by way of Buenaventura and the Panama Canal.Approximately 7,200 numbers were collected, sufficient material being-secured to make nearly equal sets for each of the institutions associatedin the expedition.
