English: The smith Henrik Henriksen (1834–1916) posing with harpoon cannons and other whaling tools. From the exhibition on Svend Foyn (1809–1894), a Norwegian whaling pioneer introducing the modern harpoon cannon in 1870, at the Slottsfjellsmuseet, a local history museum in Tønsberg in Vestfold og Telemark County, Norway. Photo taken on January 21st, 2020.
Norsk bokmål: Smeden Henrik Henriksen (1834–1916), som grunla Henriksens Mekaniske Verksted i Tønsberg, med granatharpuner og annet utstyr han utvikla for Svend Foyn fra 1860-tallet. Fra utstillinga knytta til Svend Foyn (1809–1894) i Slottsfjellsmuseet i Tønsberg i Vestfold og Telemark fylke. Foyn var skipsreder og foregangsmann i sel- og hvalfangsten. I 1870 tok han i bruk harpunkanon og granatharpun som fangstredskap og grunnla dermed den moderne hvalfagstindustrien som i løpet av de neste hundre åra nesten utrydda de største havpattedyra, blåhvalene.

Smed Henrik Henriksen

I 1856 startet smed Henrik Henriksen firmaet H. Henriksen Mek. Verksted i en smie på Råel ved Tønsberg. Bildet viser «gamlesmeden» bak noen av firmaets hvalfangstprodukter

I 1870 inngikk Henriksen et samarbeid med Svend Foyn, og den videre utviklingen i hvalfangsten skapte stor aktivitet for verkstedet.

Etter 2. verdenskrig dominerte hvalfangstproduksjonen,og i de neste årene ble det produsert opp til 6000 harpuner, pluss granater og annet hvalfangstutstyr.

Henriksen Mek. Verksted leverer fremdeles utstyr til hvalfangsten, og et av dagens produkter er den lille granaten som blir brukt av eskimoene i Alaska.
