Cam.
This is connected directly or through a ratcheting mechanism to the socket connector.
Cams of numerous shapes exist but the general idea is the same for all. Some allow for torquing in only one direction.
Ball, roller or other detent.
This is forced against the cam with spring force (sometimes adjustable). When the torque required is met, it can defeat the spring force and ball pressure on the cam and slip between cam indents.
Ball guide pin.
This holds the ball in place steadily and transfers the spring force reliably to the ball.
Spring.
This is loaded by an adjusting mechanism (usually on the other end of the wrench). It applies force to the ball retainer, ball and cam to prevent slipping until the right torque is met.
