ntlyemployed there in wall-painting, engraving, designingfor glass, and in illustrating books. He also began aseries of decorations for the Town Hall, which havebeen destroyed. In 1521 Luthers translation of theNew Testament was published, and Holbein designedthe title-page. He also designed the title-page for thesecond edition, though the work had been condemnedby the Pope. Holbein was an artist of the new faith,and his work bears upon it the spirit of the Reforma-tion. The most celebrated religious pictures painted byHolbein are the Solothum Madonna and the MeyerMadonna. The former was painted for the Cathedral ofSolothurn, and is now in the village church of Grenchen.It represents the Madonna and Child in the center, withSt. Ursus on the left, and Martin, Bishop of Tours, onthe right. The Meyer Madonna is named from the donor, thesame Jacob Meyer of whom Holbein painted a portraita number of years before. There are two of thesepictures, so nearly alike that there is much discussion

The Meyer Madonna.183 184 SKETCHES OF GREAT PAINTERS. as to which is the original. It is generally believedthat the one at Dresden is a copy, and that the one atDarmstadt is the original. The burgomaster and hisfamily are represented as worshiping the Madonna.The donor is on the left, and in front of him are hisson and a babe. At the right are the first and secondwives of the burgomaster, and his daughter. TheMadonna, standing with her beautiful head against theornamental niche, is a figure of wonderful dignity, andfull of womanly sweetness. She does not need a crownto proclaim her a queen among women. As years went on, religious strife grew more bitter,and in 1526 Basle was in a very unsettled condition.The Protestants were striving for power, but they wereopposed at every step. As a result of the trouble,there was a cessation of public works, and Holbein wasobliged to leave unfinished his decorations for theTown Hall.
