go on with his art work.Some artists at Cherbourg, who had become interestedin him, urged him to return to the city. His grand-mother also advised him to do so, and he willingly tookher advice. He then became a pupil of an artist namedLanglois, who allowed him to work with him on copiesof the Old Masters. Langlois felt that Millet ought togo to Paris to study, and through his influence theCouncil of Cherbourg voted him an annuity, and theCouncil of La Manche added enough to make it twohundred dollars. Thus it happened that in the winter of 1837 Milletwas spending his spare time at the Louvre. He carriedwith him to Paris letters of introduction to severalpeople ; but the first year was full of trouble and hard-ship, for he was proud, sensitive, and afraid of theworld. He constantly longed for his home, and atlength he fell ill. Some kind friend took him to thecountry ; but he was soon back again in Paris. Heentered Delaroches studio, but he also worked inde-pendently in a little attic.

At Delarocheshe began a picture, intending to compete for the Prixde Rome — a prize offered yearly to French artists,which enables the winner to have four years of studyin Rome. Millet tried to make his work conform tothe requirements of the judges ; and he worked withhope and energy until Delaroche told him that it wasuseless to try for the prize, for it was to be given thatyear to a certain artist. He added, however, that hewould try to obtain it for him the next year. Thehonest peasant was so shocked at this evidence of in-justice that he left the studio of his master. Then Millet and one of his comrades at the studio,Louis Alexandre Marolle, took a studio together, buttheir combined income was too small to allow them tolive in any comfort.
