passed out of the royalpossessions, but they were afterward restored. KingWilliam III. had the parts united, and a room was builtat Whitehall Palace to receive them. They were loanedsome years ago to the South Kensington Museum, wherethey now remain. The tapestries also suffered manychanges of fortune. Raphael thenproposed that the work should be estimated by somegood judge to see if he had asked an exorbitant price. The cashier, knowing that Michelangelo was gener-ally supposed to be jealous of Raphael, chose the greatsculptor to judge of the work. But when Michelangelostood before the pictures, he was filled with enthusiasmand admiration. Well, said the cashier, what isyour judgment upon the frescoes? That headalone, said Michelangelo, is worth a hundred scudi, and the others are not worth less. When this wasreported to Agostino Chigi, the man who had given thecommission, he said, Pay the artist immediately threehundred scudi and be very courteous to him, so that hewill be satisfied; for if he should insist on my payingalso for the drapery, I shall be ruined. Many remarkable portraits
