Medicipalace. Piero de Medici, who had not thought beforeof employing Michelangelo, sent for him to fashion astatue of snow, in order to satisfy a whim and entertainhis guests. As a reward for this work, the sculptorwas given his old rooms and a seat at the Dukes table;but he did not find congenial spirits there. Piero de Medicis reign was short, for Florence wassoon involved in civil war. The Medici were drivenout, and Michelangelo was obliged to flee. He went toVenice and then to Bologna, where he stayed some time,owing to a curious circumstance. It was a law of thecity that every stranger entering the town should pro-vide himself witli a little seal of red wax, to be carriedon the thumb of the right hand. Michelangelo hadneglected to do this, and not having the money to paythe fine imposed upon him, he would have been throwninto prison had he not excited the interest of one ofthe magistrates, who invited him to his home, and kepthim there for two years. Between 1500 and 1508 Michelangelo painted a HolyFamily for his friend Agnolo Doni. The picture hasbeen injured by attempts to restore it, but in the mas-terly composition, and the admirably drawn nude figuresin the background, it is a prophecy of his later work inthe Sistine Chapel. Sculpture occupied most of Michelangelos energiesfor a number of years, but in 1501 he engaged in acompetition with Leonardo da Vinci for the decorationof the Council Hall of the Palazzo Vecchio. Leonardowas then over fifty years old and was the acknowledgedmaster in all Italy.
