stands Giottos tower,The lily of Florence blossoming in stone, —A vision, a delight, and a desire, —The builders perfect and centennial flower,That in the night of ages bloomed alone,But wanting still the glory of the spire. Giotto, as a man, was as happy and as much belovedas he was when a boy. Everywhere he was welcomedas the great and dear master, who went about witha jest on his lips and beautiful thoughts in his heart.Many stories are told of how he was courted by thegreatest men of his time, who enjoyed his merry witand his simple, good heart. Every city that he visitedhas some tale totell about him. From Naples comes astory of the days when he was painting frescoes forthe king, who enjoyed visiting the painter while hewas at work, and was amused by his good sense andflashes of wit. One day while Giotto wasworking in his studio, the envoy came to him and askedfor an example of his work. Giotto looked at the mes-senger, and then with a smile on his face he took apiece of paper, and putting his arm close to his side, tomake it like a compass, he drew with a brush full of redcolor, and by a turn of his hand, a circle so round andperfect that it was a marvel to see. This done, he saidto the courtier, Here is the drawing. — Am I to havenothing but this ? said the other, stupefied. — That isenough, and too much, said Giotto, seiufit with theothers and see if it will be understood.
