Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Skara Brae – a neolithic village A village from the Stone Age smothered by sand and hidden until the dunes were stripped away by a fierce storm in 1850. It was excavated until 1868 and then left alone until 1925, when another storm caused more damage. At least three phases of occupation are known, and the site was occupied by many generations from 3200 to 2200 BC. When I first visited in 1974 it was possible to walk in the village streets and enter the houses, but no longer.
