örstgenom Punch. En helsida — cartoon —, kallad Wellington and theclown, var en af hans första politiska teckningar. Sedan ritade han för tidningen ej mindre än 3000 bilderoch dessutom illustrationer till ett femtiotal böcker, bland hvilkamärkas Dickens A Christmas Carol. Leech lär på sina bidragtill Punch ha förtjänat omkring 40,000 kronor om året, och hanblef snart hela Englands älskling. Bland de få, som ej förstodohonom, var George Cruikshank. Då man berömde Leech, sade»immortal George»: »Ja, ja, det är skickligt. Det är den nya skolan.Pubhken är alltid förtjust i det nya!» Leechs verksamhet i Punch utgjorde tvä områden, dels depolitiska helsidorna, dels de otahga skildringarna ur det dagligalifvet, som med en gemensam titel kallas sPictures of Life andCharacter». Af dessa ritningar äro de senare de bästa, men päsin tid väckte vissa af Leechs politiska cartoons också ett visstuppseende. Den lustiga bilden af Napoleon III som nykläckt 234 PUNCH.

Örnunge, tillkom med anledning af att staden Sévres den 7 oktober 1852, några veckor före det öfriga Frankrike, hylladeLouis Napoleon som kejsare (bild 181). Omornad blickar denför tidigt födda fågelungen mot ljuset, men han skulle snart blihemmastadd. Trots alla Napoleons vänliga närmanden, trotsförbundet under Krimkriget blef han för Leech och Punch alltidtvifvelaktig, och 1858, då franska officerare yttrat sig krigisktmot England, ritade Leech under titeln »Cock-a-doodle-doo!» dengalliska tuppen utstötande ett krigiskt kukeliku af den mestkomiska effekt. 235 PUNCH.
