TORSO OF APHRODITE, TYPE OF YEXUS OF ARLES, IN ATHENS To face i). 159 PRAXITELES 159 remembered that Praxiteles made two portrait statuesofPhryne which were set up, one in marble at her nativetown of Thespiae, and the other in gilt bronze atDelphi. We have no certain criteria by which theseportraits or copies of them may be recognised amongextant statues, and without further information as totheir pose and motive, any such identification can onlybe conjectural; but it has been suggested with someprobability that one of the Praxitelean figures represent-ing a goddess or a woman at her toilet, holding a mirrorin one hand and doing up her hair with the other, maybe derived from the statue of Phryne. The type is onethat is familiar with many variations in the sculpturethat owes its inspiration to Praxiteles. The figure isstanding, her drapery fixed in a coil about her waist orher hips, so as to leave the upper part of her body bare ;well-known examples are the Venus of Aries in theLouvre
