| Description |
English: Site of Gort old National School Not a lot remains of this school, except for a couple of stones; it is located to the south of Errigle old graveyard. It is quite possible that my great great grandfather Isaac Allen born in 1823 may have attended this school, before Rarogan School opened in 1836. According to the "Memories of Ballygawley" book by Eilish McSorley and Jack Johnston, it was a one-roomed school 24 foot by 24 foot built of stone walls and having a thatched roof. It became part of the National Schools system in 1833, attendance varied between 60 in the summer to 90 in the winter, making it very crowded. Possibly the smaller numbers reflected on the usage of the youngsters on seasonal tasks round the farm |
