Description |
English: The Sisters of Providence founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages throughout the northwest. Between 1856 and 1910, they established hospitals in the Washington cities of Vancouver, Seattle, Olympia, Port Townsend, Walla Walla, Yakima, Everett and Spokane. This photo shows an operating room at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Yakima in about 1905. Several sisters are assisting with the surgery. The hospital was up to date in its use of surgical masks, clean linens, rubber gloves, and antiseptic solutions. Original photograph: ca. 1905. Copied after 1975 by the Museum of History and Industry.
