English: In this photograph General Sir Douglas Haig (1861-1928) stands second from the right. Also present are Sir Joseph Ward (1856-1930), member of the New Zealand National Government and ex-Prime Minister, and the Rt. Hon William Massey (1865-1925), Prime Minister at the time (sworn in 12 August 1915). During World War I over 124,000, almost ten per cent of the New Zealand population joined the army. Seventeen thousand were killed. |
