Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sillimanite Crystals These tiny unobtrusive needle-like white crystals tell geologists about the history of this piece of rock. Sillimanite is one of three aluminium silicate minerals - the others are andalusite and kyanite - which have the same chemical composition, but take different forms according to the temperature and pressure they have been subjected to during metamorphism. The presence of these crystals tells us that these rocks have been heated to temperatures in excess of 550ºC during metamorphism, but not subjected to extreme pressures.
